A rose garden to delight the senses

Debut Ellerslie International Flower Show exhibitor Ben Pratt promises a rose garden at next month’s show which will delight the senses of all visitors. In a cottage gardening setting, Tasman Bay Roses will present a colourful display of rose varieties, from modern hybrid tea, floribunda and David Austin roses to climbing and old-fashioned roses.

Transitions: Green elements for a Christchurch rebuild

Christchurch residents’ desire for a greener central city – clearly expressed through the Share an Idea programme and translated into a very green Draft Central City Plan – inspired Landcare Research to design an Ellerslie International Flower Show exhibit that showcases some of the possibilities. Exhibit designer Colin Meurk, a Landcare Research ecologist (above), says that in redeveloping the central city Christchurch has a unique opportunity. “We can transition to a new, more confident, multi-layered city that is an attractive, relevant and viable place for people. One of those story layers is our unique natural history.

All Ages to Explore Playful Side

Visitors of all ages will be encouraged to explore their playful side at next month’s Ellerslie International Flower Show. The joint Christchurch City Council and City Care’s exhibition garden, Urban Active, is a 30m x 20m playground with a difference – it offers play options for both children and adults. Designed by the City Council and built by City Care Ltd, the garden has four rooms, creating separate spaces for children and adults to “keep playing all their life and keep fit”.

Old-fashioned flowers to steal the limelight at Ellerslie

Carnations, daisies, roses and delphiniums return to the limelight at next month’s Ellerslie International Flower Show, the flowers taking to the Project Runway catwalk in the feature exhibit in the City Care Floral Art Marquee. Award-winning international designer Franca Logan from Auckland is creating a whimsical fashion display staged as a runway set in a rambling ethereal summer garden. It will explore some of the latest trends, fashion and techniques in floral design and decoration. She says the colour palette will be delicate, summery and playful, the style open, light and airy, with some old-fashioned floral favourites making a comeback to reflect fashion’s vintage revival.

Selling Christchurch in Asia

Christchurch Airport chief executive Jim Boult, Christchurch mayor Bob Parker and a number of tourism and business representatives are to travel overseas in a bid to bring more tourists to the South Island. The delegation from Christchurch Airport, which includes the mayor’s wife, representatives of Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism and the Canterbury Development Corp, is heading to Asia to meet heads of airlines which could increase their current services to the city or start new ones.

Sudima Hotels Internet pricing reviewed

Sudima Hotels New Zealand has announced a review of the price of its Internet plan across its three hotels in New Zealand. Guests staying at a Sudima Hotel at Auckland Airport, Lake Rotorua, or Christchurch Airport will now be able to access unlimited broadband Internet for 24 hours for $10 (incl. GST). This new pricing is effective immediately.
